Heartwarming "Betty White Challenge" Honored by Betty's Fans
An online fundraising effort for animal shelters has gone viral.
Betty White would have been 100 on Monday, and some of her followers (including anybody who has switched on a television set since the 1950s) opted to commemorate her by supporting her most treasured cause: animal protection.
As a result, the #BettyWhiteChallenge, which encourages people to donate to a local animal shelter in White's honour, has gained traction on social media, with one meme in particular receiving over 3,000 likes from the Twitter account @wholesomeme.
Today would have been this wonderful woman's 100th Birthday. Happy Birthday #bettywhite. Today take the #BettyWhiteChallenge & donate to your local animal shelter in her name today or buy any of our Charity Drive shirts featuring an animal & we'll donate to an accredited shelter pic.twitter.com/IywqMHmlUA

According to CBS News, the challenge's inspiration may have come from a tweet by someone named Lisa Powell, who, according to her Twitter account, is a Hallmark lover who enjoys beaches and believes coffee is necessary. (In fact, her Twitter account is @icedcoffees.) Powell quote-tweeted Ryan Reynolds after learning of his Proposal co-star White's death on New Year's Eve, asking that people give to animal shelters on her birthday. She wrote, "It's the least we can do."
Let’s all donate something to your local animal shelter on Betty’s birthday on January 17th in her honor! It’s the least we can do to still celebrate & honor Betty’s love of animals!! #RIPBetty #BettyWhite #ripbettywhite #BettyWhiteChallenge #BettyWhiteDay https://t.co/R6JqdFI8hF

The concept was well received. Golden Girls Quotes, a Twitter account, promised to donate $5 for every 50 likes, up to a maximum of $50. That final point is crucial, as the tweet has received over 4,000 likes since it was posted on January 5. (We're not sure how profitable internet quoting The Golden Girls is these days, but we do acknowledge that it's a crucial service!)
I'm going to participate in the #BettyWhiteChallenge by donating to @AmericanHumane.

For every 50 likes this tweet gets, I'll donate an additional $5, up to a maximum total gift of $50.#GoldenGirls#BettyWhite pic.twitter.com/aaxxrp7xD5
Betty White's involvement with animal welfare dates back to the 1940s, and she has been a member of the Los Angeles Zoo since 1966. "Animals don't lie," she once wrote. Animals do not pass judgement. Animals are better at dealing with mood swings than people." She's also remarked that she has to "remain in show business to pay for my animal company," according to reports.
Don't forget to donate to your local animal shelter today 💙#BettyWhiteChallenge pic.twitter.com/8pLRMHfLGG
