A Cypriot researcher has identified a 'Deltacron' strain, a COVID-19 strain that is a mixture of Delta and Omicron variants
This Cypriot researcher claims to have been able to identify a new strain of coronavirus.
Professor Leondios Kostrikis says he has found 25 cases of what he calls "deltakron".
Deltacron is believed to be a combination of Delta and Omicron variants.
A researcher in Cyprus says he has identified a new strain of coronavirus called "Deltacron", which is a mixture of Delta and Omicron variants.
In an interview with Sigma TV on Friday, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus Leondios Kostrikis said that he and a team of researchers were able to identify 25 cases of deltacrone infection.
It's too early to tell what kind of impact Deltacron will have.
"We will see in the future if this strain of Deltacron becomes more pathogenic or contagious or whether it will prevail," he said. But he thinks Omicron, which is highly contagious and spreads quickly, will be outdone.
virologist doubts that the 25 cases discovered by Kostrikis and his team are actually caused by a new variant.
News of the Deltacron variant comes as COVID-19 cases continue to increase rapidly nationwide. Earlier this week, the United States recorded more than 1 million COVID-19 cases, shattering the single-day record set just the week before.
