New South Wales, Australia's most populated state, made the reporting of fast antigen test results mandatory on Wednesday, the pandemic's bloodiest day, with 21 deaths.

Residents who fail to register a positive quick antigen test may face a fine of up to $1,000 Australian dollars (USD721) starting next week, according to State Premier Dominic Perrottet.

The registration process, according to Perrottet, was easy and would allow health professionals to better support those with underlying health concerns.

On Wednesday, New South Wales set a new record with 21 deaths, surpassing the previous high of 18 set on Monday. COVID-19 cases increased by 34,759 in the state, resulting in 2,242 hospitalizations, including 175 patients in intensive care.

The state of Victoria also recorded 21 deaths and 40,127 new cases on Wednesday, as the state government stated that 1,000 first-year healthcare students and retired nurses will be recruited as booster shot vaccinators to satisfy increased demand.

The state's healthcare system, according to Deputy Premier James Merlino, is under strain, with roughly 6,600 personnel off job after testing positive or coming into close contact with a positive case.

Booster shots are now required for vital personnel in a variety of areas, including health care, disability care, elderly care, emergency services, correctional facilities, hotel quarantine, and food delivery, according to new pandemic orders that went into effect in Victoria on Wednesday.

After coming into close contact with a positive COVID-19 case, workers in the food and beverage manufacturing, distribution, and packing industries will be allowed to continue working.
