Tornadoes wreaking devastation over Florida
Tornadoes caused by a severe winter storm sweeping across the South Sunday morning destroyed and damaged scores of houses in southwest Florida.
Multiple waterspouts roared ashore in Lee County, near Fort Myers, Florida according to video posted on social media. Waterspouts are nothing more than tornadoes on water.
Tornadoes are tornadoes when they reach land
According to the Lee County administration, one of these tornadoes, an EF2, destroyed 28 homes and badly damaged 62 others, rendering them uninhabitable. According to WINK news, up to 200 individuals were forced to flee their houses as a result of the damage.
The majority of the damage occurred at IonaMcGregor, including an RV park.
- In Lee County, at least four persons were hurt. In adjacent Collier County, a truck driver was hurt when their vehicle was toppled by a tornado on I-75 northbound. For hours, the vehicle was blocking traffic in one direction.
- In other footage, a waterspout that touched ashore in Gulf Harbour Yacht & Country Club in Fort Myers was seen throwing debris into the air. It was unclear how much damage the neighbourhood had incurred at the time.
As of Sunday morning, strong storms raging over Florida have knocked out power to roughly 40,000 consumers.
According to the city, some houses in nearby Charlotte County were also destroyed.
January Tornadoes in Florida are unusual. In the previous 20 years, the state has only had two tornadoes on average in January. Last January, Leon County was hit by two EF1 tornadoes.
The EF2 in Lee County is the first EF2 since 2016. That tornado killed two people in Manatee County.
