(KYOU) OTTUMWA, Iowa – The winter storm that dumped snow on most of the region for much of Friday is starting to dissipate, but it will take a while before all of the precipitation is gone.

The whole area is under a Winter Storm Warning that will last until Saturday AM. This implies that traffic in the warning region will be severely disrupted, with snow-covered roads predicted for the rest of tonight and at least the first half of Saturday.

Snow is expected to last till around 6:00 a.m. throughout much of the region. The snowfall will be mild to moderate at times, with the largest amounts falling in our western counties. Winds will continue to blow from the east and northeast at 15 to 25 mph, with isolated gusts to 30 mph or higher. This will result in some snow drifting and blowing, exacerbating snow-related concerns.

As road workers attempt to clear the roads and streets, driving conditions will be hazardous for the majority of the night. As the sun rises, the weather will improve further, allowing temperatures to stabilize. The winds will begin to calm throughout the morning and afternoon, reducing the risk of snowfall.

Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are forecast over the region, with isolated higher totals likely. This forecast appears to be on track based on early reports of snowfall.

For the weekend, cooler air returns, followed by a brief warm-up at the start of the workweek. On Wednesday, another arctic air mass will arrive to end the week, bringing temperatures far below average.
